Why I Became a Doula

This is seemingly the question I’ve been asked the most! There is not just ONE reason why there are many! Here I share my Mighty Motivations for becoming a Doula…

My Doula

My first experience with a doula was with the birth of my second child. She was employed by the hospital I gave birth at. When they offered her services I agreed, not fully knowing what to expect. She was great! She massaged my feet and gave me a warm rice sock! Even though I had family there with me, she played a different role. I do not remember her name, but she will forever be a special part of my birth experience. When I gave birth for the last time at the same hospital, they no longer offered those services! That’s when I knew I wanted and needed to be a Doula.

I LOVE PREGNANCY

I am always excited when someone I know is pregnant! I mean super excited; like run around, slip, fall, and scrape your knee excited! Yes, that happened! I enjoyed being pregnant! I know that's not the feeling every woman feels, but it was how I felt. I loved seeing my belly grow, my breast got bigger, I got bigger, and I liked it! I struggled with some of the common ailments of pregnancy, but in my case, the good outweighed the unpleasant side of it! Feeling the baby move for the first time. All the other bumps and rumbles times after that. Counting in utero baby hiccups! It was just an amazing time and feeling. I always want to make sure that expectant moms know that they are beautiful! I like to remind them of how wonderful and amazing the female body is. It can grow and sustain another human life!

THE UNOFFICIAL DOULA

I have witnessed and been a part of many birthing teams during my pre-doula life. Family and friends that feel like a family have allowed me to take part in their birthing experience. Whether it was by request or just support, I was always there. I offered encouragement, reminding them of their strength. Love was shown with hand-holding or by allowing my hand to be squeezed. Shedding of tears for all the emotions that are present during birth. I offered support and advocacy when it was necessary. Sometimes it was just simply holding space! I am a naturally nurturing person. Knowing that I use that to just be a great support to other mothers!

MY FUTURE

Many years passed as I said to myself and others “ I’m going to be a Doula!” or “I want to be a Doula”. I researched Doula training. I searched the web for other Doulas that I could connect with. I had family and friends telling me to go for it! However, when the time was right it was RIGHT! The perfect training dates, the perfect amount of time to save, and most importantly the perfect mindset to move forward!

I have been a teacher for over 20 years! I believe the same reason I became a teacher is the same reason I became a Doula! THE PASSION!

At one time my passion for teaching was so strong! I worked hard to be the best and most fun teacher ever! Over the years with the constant changes in curriculum, school and statewide mandates, and just the overall trauma filled the environment, I just knew I needed to do something different! I am still the best and most fun teacher any first grader could dream of! I just know that the classroom is not where my story will end! Becoming a Doula has been overwhelmingly fulfilling. I am steadily building my foundation as a strong, long-lasting, and productive Birth Worker in the birthing community. I have goals that have been met and some in the process of being met! This is my dream job! I am indeed living the dream!
